OUR HISTORY
Small Beginnings
In the late 1940s, a group of families in the Parkwood area began to meet and pray to begin a church to serve the local community in outreach and ministry. This founding group included E.C. Haney, H.M. Hancock, and Neal Graham.
In August 1949, Parkwood Baptist Church was officially established and began meeting on Walnut Street in a makeshift building with sawdust floors. Rev. Hayden Cartner was called as the first pastor.
A permanent brick sanctuary with classrooms was built in 1952 on Central Drive (then School Street), and in 1955 a fellowship hall was built next to it. During the next several years, under subsequent pastors, a parsonage home was built on nearby Parkwood Drive. In 1965, an educational/classroom unit was added to the sanctuary.
Growth & Outreach
In 1972, Rev. Darrell Coble was called and began a span of 35 years as Senior Pastor. With continuing growth, facilities were remodeled, enlarged, and rebuilt to accommodate additional staff, expanding ministries, and space for classrooms and functions. Associate ministry staff was added as well as a full-time ministry to the deaf led by Rev. Bo Sherrill.
The current sanctuary was built in 1989. Then in 2001, the Family Ministry Center was completed in order to serve all age groups with classrooms, a kitchen, and a large multi-purpose room. Upon Rev. Coble’s retirement in 2007, the building was renamed the Coble Family Ministry Center in honor of his years of ministry and service to the church and community.
Parkwood Today
In 2009, following interim leadership, Rev. Michael Waters was called as Senior Pastor.
In these most recent years, Parkwood has expanded its focus on missions, equipping teams, and supporting many local and international missions. Facilities upgrades have included expansions of the parking lot and the building of a new covered drive and lobby.
Led and served by its current pastoral and administrative staff, Parkwood Baptist Church continues to be blessed with faithful and dedicated servants united in the goals of its charter members to reach the lost with the saving grace of Christ and to minister in His name to all.
